Pitch Perfect 2 (2015) ★★☆☆☆

The pitch is far from perfect, and the narrative needs a tuning. Pitch-Perfect-2-Anna-Kendrick-Brittany-Snow-Wallpapers

Pitch Perfect proved to be one of 2012’s most unexpected hits. This time around, after a performance for the President goes horribly wrong, the Bellas are suspended, facing termination unless they can win the World A Cappella Championship – which no U.S. group has done before. To add to their dilemma, Beca (Anna Kendrick) gets an internship at a recording company, taking her focus off the competition, therefore threatening their chance at winning.

Most of the acting is faultless and this has been consistent since the first installment, but a couple of new characters just don’t fit well in the collective scheme of the film. Though, Hailee Steinfeld is a nice addition to the cast, playing Emily, the newest Bella. The best thing about the film is undoubtedly the performances. The narrative is always simple, formulaic and very predictable, but I suppose this film isn’t particularly focused on having an enthralling narrative, it is more about the overall experience. I feel the film was crammed with too many stereotypes; gender and racial. Also, a lot of the jokes were trying a bit too hard to be funny, and as a result, weren’t. Whereas in the original, most of the jokes felt rather effortless, evoking humour in the ways in wanted to.

Ultimately, it wasn’t as aca-mazing as Pitch Perfect, yet it still didn’t fail to deliver in some ways more than others. There is currently a lot of hype surrounding this sequel, but be careful not to get swept in. Don’t get me wrong, I liked it, but I didn’t love it as much as I did the first. This is one for the fans. Teenagers and children especially will unquestionably love this sequel, perhaps as much as the first. For an older audience, it can be perceived as a hit and miss. It’s fun and cheesy, though sticks tight to the typical conventions of a sequel. Now whether that’s a good thing or not, is for you to decide…

  1. Thanks for this review! From the previews, this one didn’t look quite as good as the first one. I will definitely still watch it and probably get the songs stuck in my head, but I won’t get too swept up in the hype. – Gabriella

  2. Great review! Even though I do really like the first Pitch Perfect film, I don’t think that it really deserved a sequel (or even a third film that was announced recently). I know I have friends who are excited for this film but I think I’ll just wait till it’s added to NowTV.

  3. I wasn’t a big fan of the first film to say the least, but this one definitely didn’t look quite as good. I found the trailer to be a little too much into the racial stereotype part as you mentioned in the review. I just don’t find those kind of jokes to be funny and I wish that the films would go a little more old school in that department. I may see this at some point, but I shall certainly take your advice and not see it in theaters! DVD sounds just fine to me.

  4. I have heard that this doesn’t measure up to the joy of the first film. The box office numbers are staggering, though, A LOT of people clearly wanted much more of the same. It’s a shame this doesn’t seem to quite deliver on that. At least the performances are good.
