A lazy adaptation.
Directed by David Yates, The Legend of Tarzan explores how after living at Greystoke Manor with his wife Jane (Margot Robbie), John Clayton III, aka Tarzan (Alexander Skarsgård) is enticed back into Africa by a Belgian man named Leon Rom (Christoph Waltz). Rom hopes to entice John back to Africa at the request of Chief Mbonga (Djimon Hounsou), who seeks revenge on him for killing his son.
Alexander Skarsgård certainly looks the part, but it is embarrassingly apparent in the film that he should have spent more time taking acting lessons than perfecting his ‘buff’ physique. His performance leaves a lot to be desired and barely shows an inch of emotion. God knows what the casting director was thinking. A bland lead performance only amounts to a tedious piece of cinema. As for fans of Christoph Waltz, you aren’t missing out – Tarantino’s films are the best bet if you wish to see him at his most successful. Not even Margot Robbie’s pretty face could save this film. The narrative drags like a never-ending lullaby, and the characters are paper thin. The CGI looks particularly fake, and doesn’t do the film any further justice, only dragging it further down the vine.
Designed purely for mass consumption and serving as merely a cash-grab, The Legend of Tarzan is Disney’s worst live-action remake to date. Unless you’re a Tarzan ‘super-fan’, do not settle for this level of mediocre cinema. In fact, how can this be labelled as ‘cinema’? If this is what the film industry is proudly churning out, then they should be truly ashamed of dumbing down their output to this extent. Not only is this a dull remake, it makes for an uninspired mess. The second it begins, you will beg for it to finish, and not in a good way.
Yup, this just looked painfully bland from the first time I saw the trailer. Great review.

I’m not especially bothered by Tarzan as a character, but since this was directed by David Yates, it does make me fear a little for FANTASTIC BEASTS AND WHERE TO FIND THEM. I’ll give this one a miss going by your review.

Neither, I never have been, even as I child, I didn’t find him near enough as captivating as the other Disney characters. I agree, the hype surrounding the film is a bit too much, which makes me think it will be overrated…Thanks for reading!!

I was disappointed that Christoph Waltz was shoehorned into a typecast villain role. Super sad.
Though I do want to add that this was distributed by Warner Brothers not Disney.
