Top 5: Best Films of 2021

Here’s 5 cinematic delights from this year that I had the pleasure of escaping (or sobbing) to. What was your favourite film of 2021?

5. Last Night in Soho (2021)

Oh the stylish ’60s! *exhales* Appreciate Old Hollywood, neon lights and a gripping narrative? This one’s singing to you. Last Night in Soho will have you hooked on its charm from the beginning. (It must be noted that the ending to this film didn’t live up to expectations and could have reached new heights. Though, it wasn’t too disastrous, so didn’t take too much away from the film as it was so highly enjoyable and intriguing throughout.)

4. Spencer (2021)

Spencer makes you feel again. It makes you remember what it’s like to fall in love with a film. And that’s what makes it a charming masterpiece. Its stunning cinematography captures each detail and heavy emotion with a sharp eye; a genuine nod to Diana without all the melodrama and typically repetitive, unbearable storytelling of the Royals.

3. Petite Maman (2021)

Tender and soft storytelling, most of which is echoed through small actions and emotion. Petite Maman is a feast for the heart. Another directorial delight from Céline Sciamma. She’s just the gift that keeps on giving, through understated beauty and minimalist storytelling. A short, sweet must-see on a rainy afternoon.

2. tick, tick…BOOM! (2021)

Grab the loo roll – tissues won’t be enough. A charming biopic to sob over uncontrollably if you love musical theatre. Lin Manuel Miranda blesses our screens once again with his impeccable, heartfelt direction and addictive soundtracks. Garfield throws himself into this role; one of the most meaningful performance’s of the year, hands down. Watch it, for god’s sake!

1. The Worst Person in the World (2021)

Intriguing, empathetic, real. You’re not the same person once the film has finished. A raw character study of not only the protagonist, but each delicate soul involved. The editing lies as a true standout and conveys a real perspective showing the angst of navigating life.
